I was first introduced to the wonders of juicing while
visiting our friend Jenny, the Martha Stewart of juicing, in Orlando. She
juiced up a delightful blend of kale, carrots and pears for breakfast one
morning. We liked it so much we immediately started talking about getting our
own juicer. But it didn’t happen, all talk – no action.
Months past and I saw my friends from Hot House Yoga talking about a new “juice bar” open in the Hilltop area of Virginia Beach. Ooo, do tell I said. A few weeks ago I popped in to Fruitive and picked up a Nobleman containing green apple, pineapple, kale, spinach, cucumber and celery. I couldn’t have imagined a better way to get a serving (maybe more) of my veggies. While I could taste the kale in each sip it wasn’t overpowering because of the great balance and sweetness of the fruits. I say that because I want to help decrease the fear of green drinks. Don't fear the green - it’s good.
With my man-love back in town (whoop whoop) and hungry after
an awesome crossfit workout we headed to Fruitive for a late afternoon lunch of
juice. This time I opted to try one of the smoothies, the Carrot Craze with
orange juice, almond milk, carrot, pineapple, mango and limejuice. Man-love
out-ordered me with the F.I.T, which had almond milk, blueberry, banana and
peanut butter. He also added vanilla protein. His drink was more like dessert.
I think the vanilla protein made it taste like there was a crumbled sugar cone
in it. Plus it had peanut butter in it. Mmm, peanut butter.
While the concept, the staff and the products are
impressive. To me, a literature fan, the shelves lined with old, hard back, in
some cases first edition books are the most impressive. I’ve had the chance to
speak to both of the owners while in there and I always steer the conversation
towards the books. One has been kind to pull first editions of Mark Twain off
the shelf to show to me. I warned that I might “accidentally” walk out with it, in which he warned big brother is watching with a nod to the security cameras.
Fruitive is a great option for those who haven’t taken
juicing in-house yet (we have good intentions). It also makes for a super,
healthy, fast-food option. They have salads and wraps in addition to the
juices and smoothies. It is LOCAL, so support them – it is good for you and our
community.
